Bluefors Opens Shared Lab Facility at mHUB to Boost Quantum R&D in Chicago
Bluefors, the world leader in manufacturing cryogenic measurement systems for quantum technology, has joined mHUB as a tenant to provide one of its LD400 Dilution Refrigerator Measurement Systems for users in Chicago. The system allows quantum researchers and tech innovators to operate at cryogenic temperatures—critical for the functionality of qubits in quantum technologies such as quantum computers, sensors, and communications. The addition of this equipment to mHUB’s prototyping labs will add to a growing pool of resources for quantum research and development in the region.
“Chicago and Illinois have historically been major players in advancing computing technologies, and we are thrilled to contribute to this innovation ecosystem,” said Anssi Salmela, Chief Technical Operations Officer at Bluefors. “The city’s strategic investment in quantum technology makes it an ideal location for accessibility to our measurement system in the US, empowering innovators to push the boundaries of what is possible in quantum science and engineering.”
The LD400 system will function as a shared resource, allowing users to rent the equipment for weeks or months as needed. A pilot program with the system’s first partner will launch in March, with availability to the public beginning in April. Users will also have access to mHUB’s full suite of prototyping labs, curriculum, programs, and events.
The introduction of the Bluefors LD400 marks another step forward in Illinois’ mission to establish itself as a quantum technology hub. Backed by significant investment from the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois, initiatives like the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park aim to attract top-tier talent and strengthen the region’s infrastructure for quantum innovation. The park will support companies such as PsiQuantum and IBM, alongside major universities and national laboratories.
“Early-stage innovators in quantum are increasingly drawn to Chicago, thanks to its growing infrastructure and commitment to fostering progress in the field,” said Manas Mehandru, Chief Operating Officer at mHUB. “The addition of Bluefors’ LD400 system increases accessibility to the world-class tools entrepreneurs need to push boundaries and strengthens a strong and growing local ecosystem around quantum.”
