Optimizing the Innovation Pipeline with Active Portfolio Management

Active portfolio management is a next generation methodology that goes beyond simple logical framework for project selection, but also leads to organizational consensus that can accelerate speed to market through identifying the proper skills and resources necessary for project success. This is not a discussion on optimizing the PMO office. Active project management ensures your portfolio reflects your innovation strategy at all levels of the company.

Optimizing the Innovation Pipeline with Active Portfolio Management

With adoption of more rigorous customer-centric discovery methodologies many organizations find themselves overloaded with too many viable product ideas to develop, and their review process is choked with projects with exaggerated metrics.

Development managers are frustrated with:

  • Under-resourced projects
  • Too many main-stream low-risk, incremental improvements
  • Missed deadlines due to resource overload
  • Exaggerated performance metrics to secure continued funding
  • Sacrifice of more technically challenging and more profitable products

Active portfolio management is a next generation methodology that goes beyond simple logical framework for project selection, but also leads to organizational consensus that can accelerate speed to market through identifying the proper skills and resources necessary for project success. This is not a discussion on optimizing the PMO office. Active project management ensures your portfolio reflects your innovation strategy at all levels of the company.

Active portfolio methodology also leverages Abbie Griffin’s research-based model, (JPIM: An Empirical Investigation of the Antecedents and Outcomes of NPD Portfolio Success, June 2014). It studied exemplar corporations providing an understanding of the underlying portfolio drivers and how decision bias impacts growth.

Three Key Learning Points:

  1. Three drivers to successful portfolio management found in exemplar companies
  2. Using Co-Creation workshops to implement a Portfolio Management Culture
  3. Portfolio frameworks (e.g., Three Horizons, Ambition Matrix, 70/20/10) strengths and weaknesses

Doug will be presenting a case study generated from implementing active portfolio management at Land O’Lakes. Land O’Lakes’ adoption of active portfolio management to their dairy SBU has led to more strategic projects and faster speed to market, without overwhelming the operations team with NPD responsibilities.

Presenter

Doug Stone, a nine-year veteran of deploying portfolio management tools at large corporations (CPG, durable products, and financial services), will provide case studies and hard earned lessons in applying active portfolio management.

Target Audience

Senior leadership in corporations responsible for selecting innovation strategy or projects, or participants looking to gain an edge: Marketing, Program Managers, Product Developers (S/W and H/W), Product Managers, Marketing Managers, Product Management Teams.
