Mechanical Engineer - Crimson Scientific
Position Title: Mechanical Engineer
Location: Chicago, IL, USA
About Us (www.CrimsonScientific.com)
Crimson Scientific is an innovative medical technology company dedicated to developing next-generation diagnostic tools. We specialize in wearable medical devices designed for real-world use, bringing advanced engineering and human-centered design together to create products that improve clinical outcomes. As part of our exciting development process, we are seeking a talented engineer/designer to help prototype and test our technologies.
Position Overview
We are looking for a creative and detail-oriented engineer/designer with expertise in compliant
mechanism design and adaptive device development. This role will focus on prototyping medical devices that conform to variable anatomical contours, ensuring functionality, comfort, and usability. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in flexible systems engineering, material selection, and rapid prototyping techniques. Candidates with prior experience in wearable medical devices, soft robotics, or dynamic fitting systems are highly encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
• Design and prototype compliant mechanisms and flexible devices that conform to irregular and variable human anatomical contours.
• Select and test materials (e.g., silicones, elastomers, thermoplastics) for durability, comfort,
and performance.
• Utilize CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360) to create 3D models and validate designs
through finite element analysis (FEA) or similar simulation tools.
• Work hands-on with 3D printers, CNC machines, and other fabrication tools to rapidly
prototype designs.
• Conduct performance testing and iterative improvements to ensure device accuracy,
comfort, and adaptability.
• Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to refine prototypes and translate concepts into
functional devices.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience:
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field.
• Expertise in compliant mechanisms, flexible systems, or adaptive device design.
• Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360) and simulation tools (e.g., FEA software).
• Strong understanding of material properties and selection for compliant devices.
• Hands-on experience with prototyping techniques such as 3D printing, CNC machining, and
working with soft materials.
• Familiarity with human-centered design principles and devices that interface with the human body.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
• Experience with wearable medical devices or other regulated medical technologies.
• Knowledge of biocompatibility standards (e.g., ISO 10993) and FDA guidelines for medical devices.
• Experience in soft robotics, dynamic systems, or similar adaptive technologies.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
