FIRST LEGO League Season Kickoff

The Ogden Robotics Team will host the FIRST Lego League season kick-off at mHUB for the City of Chicago students who will compete in this season's robotics competition. For this competition, elementary and middle school-aged students will research a real-world engineering challenge, develop a solution, and compete with LEGO-based robots of their own design. Students will learn about the work of building and public space professionals so that they can invent their own real-world solutions.

At our kick-off students will learn about the work of building and public space professionals so that they can invent their own real-world solutions. We will have: speakers on building and public spaces; judging and referee expertise and training on coaching, robot design and game strategy.

CITY SHAPER SPEAKER: GHIAN FOREMAN

Foreman is the first CEO of the Emerald South Economic Development Collaborative; the group that works to develop and support South Side communities through a focus on commercial-corridor expansion, sustainable housing, and workforce development. Prior to joining Emerald South, he was the Executive Director of Greater Southwest Development Corporation (GSDC), a CDC focused on the improvement of the Southwest Side of Chicago.

Foreman was the Managing Partner of Maktub Development, a real estate development firm focused on inner city development. In this capacity, Ghian was responsible for $30 million in investments and development in traditionally under-served urban markets throughout the United States. Ghian also previously served as VP of Strategic Acquisitions at HSBC where he oversaw over $3 billion in acquisitions.

Foreman sits on several boards including serving as President of the Chicago Police Board and member of the Rebuild Foundation. He earned his BS from Florida A&M University, and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He lives in Kenwood with his wife Traci and daughter Jade.

PUBLIC SPACES SPEAKER: ISMAEL CUEVAS

Ismael Cuevas is currently the Director of External Affairs for the Committee on Workforce Development within the City of Chicago. He is the former Chief of Staff for Alderwoman Susan Sadlowski Garza in the 10th Ward. Mr. Cuevas has had a lifelong passion with working and motivating students of color to think outside the box in their educational trajectory. He has mentored students in high school, undergraduate, and graduate programs in attaining access to scholarships, extracurricular academic programming, and professional development. Mr. Cuevas is currently a publicly elected member of the Local School Council at Benito Juarez Community Academy. He is currently a board representative of Friends of Big Marsh, an organization made up of outdoor recreation enthusiasts ready to demonstrate to the world the power of play to improve open spaces, boost local business, and raise quality of life. He is also a board member of the newly created Music of the Americas Institute, which catalyses music as a vehicle for social change in the Chicago Latinx community. He earned his BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and lives in Pilsen.
